The King Of Rock 'N' Roll : The Complete 50's Masters five CD box set 2012 re-issue. Like previous 'bookset' reissues of the 60s and 70s masters Boxes, there appear to be all 'pros' and very few 'cons' with this release. The content hasn't changed, simply reconfigured into the shelf-friendly DVD-sized 'bookset'. You still get every studio master released by Elvis in the 1950s, as well as rare recordings (My Happiness and That's When Your Heartaches Begin from 1953) and various alternate takes / outtakes and live cuts. In total, 140 tracks tell the story from the early Sun Records recordings, and the RCA signing, until Elvis put his recording career on hold when joined the army in 1958. The 44-page booklet contains the same Peter Guralnick essay as the original, guiding us through Elvis'career-defining early years in an informative and entertaining manner. There is also a 'sessionograhy' detailing all the recording sessions, as well as a discography. An abundance of photos including album covers, posters record labels evoke the era perfectly.

 Loving You has been carefully restored by Kevan Budd and is a variation of the BMG release from earlier in the year. The FTD label has been able to obtain a handful of movie versions from a brilliant tape source, and on disc 2 you get the opportunity to hear all takes of Elvis recording the title song 'Loving You' on February 14, 1957. You will get 15 takes of the main version in binaural as an extra bonus. |

Jailhouse Rock is a 2-disc set in the classic album series. Disc 1 features one disc of masters, alternate masters, movie masters and a few bonus cuts in mono. Disc 2 consists of session takes - all in binaural. The package features the 7" inch digipack format with 12-page booklet. There is no In And Outtakes section to the booklet, as FTD will be releasing 'Jailhouse Rock Vol. 2' next year, and it will make more sense to have this section when the entire intended repertoire content is released. Elvis Presley recorded his first Christmas album in sessions of September 5 - 7, 1957 at Radio Recorders in Hollywood. It was simply entitled 'Elvis' Christmas Album' and was released in October 1957. Content included Christmas hymns, secular Christmas songs and non-holiday gospel numbers. It initially hit #1 for 4 weeks on Billboard's pop album chart and revisited the chart due to strong sales in subsequent holiday seasons through 1962. Eventually, the original 1957 content with original cover art came out again in the CD age. |
