Elvis Presley CD, Book and DVD Reviews Review : Elvis : Hot August Night

Elvis was in fine form on this 'Hot August Night' of the 25th of August 1969, a performance perhaps never to be beaten. For those that only read the summery of reviews, I can be quite clear, this concert is without doubt the best live recording released to-date of Elvis Presley in 1969, and is one of the best concerts Elvis Presley ever performed - both in sound quality and performance! Why? I could say, listen to it and you will agree, but I offer you an interesting fact, it was from this concert that RCA chose to use seven [7] of the tracks to make up the original 12 track 'Elvis In Person' album in 1969. This is 58% of the albums tracks. And this is from the good number of concerts recorded of which several have been released on CD by FTD.

Made In Memphis FTD CD

Made In Memphis FTD CD StereoThe FTD (Follow That Dream), Sony Music's Official Elvis Presley Collectors Label. Made in Memphis FTD CD is another in an extended string of vault excavations from Elvis Presley's apparently inexhaustible library of alternate, unused, and unfinished takes, to be issued by the custom label Follow That Dream through RCA-BMG. For starters, as with many of the unused takes, because there's been no dubbing or the loss of even a single generation, you get a much closer sound than on most of Elvis' released recordings, even the properly remastered editions; on 'Do You Know Who I Am', you are close enough in the mix to the voice microphone that you can hear every breath and even the whisper of the smallest nuances in his performance, almost too close in terms of picking up flaws that are very evident -- on the other hand, his vocal charisma is more evident here, on this flawed take (that begins with a false start at the wrong tempo), than it would be on more polished and successful readings; the effect is almost addictive to the listener.

Elvis : All Shook Up FTD CD : Stereo : August 26, 1969 : Midnight Show [Stereo]

Elvis : All Shook Up FTD CD : Stereo : August 26, 1969 : Midnight Show [Stereo] StereoFTD (Follow That Dream), Sony Music's Official Elvis Presley Collectors Label. All Shook Up is a professionally recorded RCA concert featuring Elvis' August 26, 1969 Las Vegas performance (midnight show) and Includes three (3) rare Live Recordings. Unique performances; Runaway, Rubberneckin' and This Is The Story and the laughing version of 'Are You Lonesome Tonight'. [It was actually Whitney Houston's mother, Cissy, was the cause of one of Elvis' most famous recordings, the 'laughing version' of 'Are You Lonesome Tonight?'. It was during Cissy Houston's soprano obbligato on 'Are You Lonesome Tonight?' that Elvis started laughing.] Of the concerts released from this 1969 Vegas season, the sound and performance on All Shook Up HAS to be the best so far! All Shook Up is one concert that truly captures Elvis' magic and is thoroughly recommended! The Dinner show from this same day is available as Live In Vegas from FTD. Elvis at the International, (August 23, 1969) is also currently available, and is another great show.

Elvis : At The International FTD CD [Stereo] : Elvis Presley FTD CD

Elvis : At The International FTD CD [Stereo] : Elvis Presley FTD CD StereoFTD (Follow That Dream), Sony Music's Official Elvis Presley Collectors Label. Elvis At The International was recorded by RCA in Stereo during Elvis Presley's triumphant 1969 engagement (August 23, 1969 - Midnight Show) at the International Hotel in Las Vegas. In August 1969 Elvis Presley was bursting with a new enthusiasm and energy. ‘In The Ghetto’ had just charted #3 in the US and Elvis needed to prove to his first Las Vegas audience that the King could reclaim his crown. This is the first ever complete concert released from 1969, with Elvis In Person being a compilation. There is a lot of ambience thus containing the live feel a concert CD should have. The audience is there with you all the time, without taking away the charm of any instrument or any vocal. A great show in great sound quality is all we can ask for. This is a brilliant CD, containing not only the best live version of ‘Suspicious Minds’ released so far but showcases Elvis Presley in fabulous voice and great humor. This is the 20th FTD release and one of their very best, If you had to choose one Elvis show that you could have witnessed then this, August 23rd Midnight show, would have to be near the top of your list. After hearing this I won’t be playing ‘In Person’ again! Includes five (5) RARE Live Recordings. Unique performances; Memories, Baby What You Want Me To Do, Runaway, Reconsider Baby and What'd I Say.

From Elvis In Memphis : 40th Anniversary Legacy Edition : 2 CD Set

From Elvis In Memphis : 40th Anniversary Legacy Edition : 2 CD Set From Elvis In Memphis : 40th Anniversary Legacy Edition - 2 CD Set contains 36 tracks across 2 CDs, including 10 original mono single masters. (And after all these were the actually hit records most have not actually heard!) This release commemorates the 40th Anniversary of Elvis' historic American Studio sessions that resulted in 'Suspicious Minds', 'In the Ghetto' and 'Kentucky Rain' among many others. The recordings have been remastered from the original album masters for optimum sound quality. After a 14-year absence from Memphis, Elvis Presley returned to cut what was certainly his greatest album (or, at least, a tie effort with his RCA debut LP, Elvis Presley, from early 1956). The fact that From Elvis in Memphis came out as well as it did is something of a surprise, in retrospect -- Presley had a backlog of songs he genuinely liked that he wanted to record and had heard some newer soul material that also attracted him, and none of it resembled the material that he'd been cutting since his last non-soundtrack album, six years earlier. And he'd just come off of the NBC television special which, although a lot of work, had led him to the realization that he could be as exciting and vital a performer in 1969 as he'd been a dozen years before. And for what was practically the last time, the singer cut his manager, Tom Parker, out of the equation, turning himself over to producer Chips Moman. The result was one of the greatest white soul albums (and one of the greatest soul albums) ever cut, with brief but considerable forays into country, pop, and blues as well. Presley sounds rejuvenated artistically throughout the dozen cuts off the original album, and he's supported by the best playing and backup singing of his entire recording history.
