Another Saturday Night FTD 5" Soundboard Concert CD

FTD will release Another Saturday Night in their 5" concert CD series at the end of April. If one place is to be picked as the most important in the career of Elvis Presley, it is without doubt Shreveport in the northwest part of Louisiana. The exposure that Elvis got through the radio broadcast of The Louisiana Hayride in 1954-56 was one of the key factors of establishing the early part of his career. With the exception of Las Vegas, there is no place where Elvis played more shows, and his return to the city in 1975 was like a homecoming to both Elvis and the many fans he had there since he started out. FTD have chosen to release the soundboard from the evening show of June 7, definitely a show that Elvis and the audience truly enjoy, and with a great set list featuring old and new favourites. The CD comes in a 5" digipack with an eight-page booklet featuring photos from the June 1975 tour.

The Memphis Record CD : 1969 : Year In Review

This CD -- The Memphis Record -- was originally released in 1987 and at the time was the foremost collection of Elvis' Memphis sessions available. Comprising tracks from both original albums it includes some notably different mixes which makes this release (in my opinion) all the more interesting. All the tracks have been remastered and sound crystal clear and the few different mixes serve to highlight the backing vocal arrangements and instrumentation and offer some different and very interesting insights into the songs. The tracks are obviously in a different order because this is a compilation. The well-designed booklet includes an extensive essay from Peter Guralnick (author of the definitive Elvis biographies 'Last Train To Memphis' and 'Careless Love') covering the sessions and the song choices. To sum-up, this CD remains one of my favourite albums and is a worthy addition to any Elvis collection and a great companion piece to the original albums.

I Sing All Kinds a collection of outtakes from the sessions in Nashville during 1971 - I Sing All Kinds has been high on the priority list of many fans for quite some time. This is a great CD - highly recommended to all fans. Sometimes living a long life has its rewards. Living to see this superb FTD album is surely one of them. Shorn of the intrusive post production dubs, orchestration and background harmonies of the original releases, and given some inspired sound mixing, the songs on this FTD release are a joy to listen to. The improvement in sound and feel of the original releases is remarkable, revealing an unsuspected vitality and energy, and consequently, the enjoyment the album delivers surpasses anything you can anticipate.

Elvis Presley : The 50 Greatest Love Songs starts perfectly with the classic 'Always on My Mind' and follows this with the rare Take 1 of 'And I Love You So' where Elvis starts by saying to (his then girlfriend) Sheila Ryan, 'Step here Sheila and let me sing to you baby'. This is a delightful version (same mix as '6363 Sunset') that your average CD buyer will not have heard before and is a hidden classic that truly deserves a mainstream release after 27 years of being secreted away.

Elvis Country (I'm 10,000 Years Old) : FTD Special Edition 2 CD [7" Classic Album Presentation]

How do you follow up an album like From Elvis In Memphis and the singles and follow up album that flowed from the 1969 recording sessions at Chip's Moman's Memphis American Sound Studio's? In February 1970 RCA recorded Elvis live in Las Vegas and released the classic live album, On Stage, but it was not until June of that year that Elvis re-entered a studio to cut an album proper. Elvis Country was the result, it was Elvis' only real concept album and in my opinion does rate as Elvis best album.

Interestingly 'Husky Dusky Day' also appears and though very short (50 seconds) it is quite an amusing little ditty sung in duet with the lovely Hope Lang. One of the best FTD releases by far!

48 Hours To Memphis : FTD CD : 7" Packaging

48 Hours to Memphis is a Live Concert recorded on March 18, 1974 in Richmond Virginia, 2 days before Recorded Live On Stage In Memphis. It is derived from what must have been a full professional 16-track multi track recording, the sound is absolutely great, and Elvis is in top form. While it is actually not stereo it is very high quality 'hi-fi' and not only is it not a soundboard it compares perfectly with normal stereo releases. The booklet is full of great pictures from the actual show and informative notes. The CD comes in a 7" digi format with a 16 page booklet.

An American Trilogy contains Las Vegas Concert Recordings from the January/February 1972. This release covers Elvis' engagement at The Las Vegas Hilton in January-February, 1972. RCA did not record entire shows, and several of the new songs Elvis had added to his shows were only recorded once. The consequence is that the main body of the CD - the RCA recordings - feature several previously released versions. Soundboard recordings of other song performances during the engagement were added to the end of the disc in order to make this as representative as possible of Elvis’ repertoire at that time. James Burton : The Early Years : 1957-1969 CD is the first of two volumes that document the career of one of the world's greatest-ever guitarists, recognized as such by many top musicians, including Keith Richards, who gave the induction speech when James entered the Rock 'n' Roll Hall Of Fame. James Burton's instantly recognizable finger-picking style graced many fine records by artists including Dale Hawkins, Rick Nelson and John Denver. He was the mainstay of Elvis Presley's TCB band, backing him on record and in concert. The earliest track on this first volume is from 1956 with his first-ever recording, backing Carol Williams, for Shreveport's Ram Records, and finishes with Buddy Cagle's Guitar Player from 1969. The Special Delivery : The Ultimate Elvis Presley Collectors Box contains an unbelievable soft cover book promoted in the pre-publicity as a 'unique 60-page Elvis & Priscilla Wedding Album', while I felt sure this was going to be the highlight of the box set I was not prepared for how comprehensive it is, and I must admit I did not know there where so many high quality photos of Elvis and Priscilla's Wedding available. It contains both detailed information and photos, measures 15 1/2 inches [16.5cm] x 9 inches [23.5cm] and you would expect to pay around $59.95 for it on its own. The size of the book makes it easy to handle and look through without being too small. You don't have to store it away on a bookshelf, it can be kept handy to be used and enjoyed. Although it does come in a nice collectors box!!! It is something I [and anyone that buys a set] will keep forever and I have not doubt whatsoever that both Priscilla and Lisa Marie would appreciate it if the producers would send them a copy each. However as the set is almost sold out that may be a problem. Next up we have the 'Fame And Fortune' CD. Now I enjoyed listening to this immensely, it contains 26 tracks all alternate takes and they combine nicely. This I have no doubt is quite valuable as only 1000 were pressed but if it were to be sold individually normally you would expect to pay around $40. The CD is titled 'Fame And Fortune' and contains a total of 13 previously unreleased studio out takes along with a further 13 tracks.

Polk Salad Annie contains live RCA stereo recordings from February 15, 1970 in Las Vegas plus bonus tracks from February 17th to February 19th. Polk Salad Annie is the third CD to be released from the professionally recorded February 15th M/S to 19th D/S recordings. Following the original On Stage album, we had an expanded version (with more 69/70 recordings) in 1999, and at last a FTD purely devoted to the second Las Vegas season. Although 'All Shook Up' and the first part of 'I Got A Woman' are not on the tape, the remainder is the complete 15th February midnight show.
This is another great release and a must have CD!
