Elvis : Hits Of The 70s 2 CD : FTD Special Edition / Classic Album 7" Presentation

FTD release of Hits Of The 70s in the 2 CD Classic Album Series [7" Packaging presentation] : Originally released in the UK in 1974, this newly expanded edition offers a superb overview of Elvis' greatest songs in the '70s. While the album doesn't feature any outtakes, it does have a substantially expanded track-listing that now features 24 A & B sides and bonus track My Way. The 12-page booklet features both UK and US sleeves, release/chart information and historic overview. This is its first official release on CD.

3000 South Paradise Road 2 CD : FTD Special Edition / Classic Album 7" Presentation

FTD release of 3000 South Paradise Road a 2 disc 7" 'Classic Album' format with a 16-page booklet. This release takes a closer look at Elvis' engagement at the Las Vegas Hilton with a soundboard recording in August of 1972. The main disc is from the dinner show on August 12, and the second disc is culled from the rehearsals on August 4th, the date of the opening of the engagement. As with '48 Hours To Memphis', this release has been prepared by Robert Frieser and Hans Slebos, who once again has done a fabulous job of collecting information and materials for the project. There will be additional information in the next few weeks. '3000 South Paradise Road' provides a unique experience of Elvis rehearsing, 6 hours before the opening night at the Las Vegas Hilton on August 4, 1972. As disc 2 is captured on a personal tape recorder, the sonic quality is below standards, but historical significance more than compensates for its audio limitations.

This is a unique performance by Elvis with stand out songs, What Now My Love, My Way, An American Trilogy and Fever. The quality of the music having a separation contributing to the overall performance that one normally only associates with stereo recordings. FTD have chosen to present this concert in their 7" size Classic Album packaging and it comes with a fantastic booklet with liner notes that are very well written and well worth reading, and it is nice to see Elvis on stage in a two piece non-jumpsuit outfit, clearly still in his prime.

It is clear how much Elvis valued and wanted to perform What Now My Love this day, August 12, 1972 with his comment about getting serious before starting the song, and he performs in near flawlessly. And of particular interest are Elvis' comments after My Way, where he says 'that's a very good song ... I wouldn't want to associate it with my own personal life ... now the end is near and all that jazz... it's a nice song, it's okay for Sinatra but ... I haven't even ate it up and spit it out yet, still chewing on it ... no it's a good song ... And indeed as indicated above, What Now My Love and My Way : two great performances, and totally unique. So in a word, do I recommend this release : YES!

48 Hours to Memphis is a Live Concert recorded on March 18, 1974 in Richmond Virginia, 2 days before Recorded Live On Stage In Memphis. It is derived from what must have been a full professional 16-track multi track recording, the sound is absolutely great, and Elvis is in top form. While it is actually not stereo it is very high quality 'hi-fi' and not only is it not a soundboard it compares perfectly with normal stereo releases. The booklet is full of great pictures from the actual show and informative notes. The CD comes in a 7" digi format with a 16 page booklet.

Through literally hundreds of photos : many previously unpublished : we get to join Elvis at his show in Detroit on May 25. Jailhouse Rock is a 2-disc set in the classic album series. Disc 1 features one disc of masters, alternate masters, movie masters and a few bonus cuts in mono. Disc 2 consists of session takes - all in binaural. The package features the 7" inch digipack format with 12-page booklet. There is no In And Outtakes section to the booklet, as FTD will be releasing 'Jailhouse Rock Vol. 2' next year, and it will make more sense to have this section when the entire intended repertoire content is released.

As you know the original concept album was never released and it's possible that the version FTD create was never meant to be, but it's the best way to present the Las Vegas masters from February of 1972 and the masters and outtakes from the March 1972 sessions at RCA. Standing Room Only was the working title for the Elvis On Tour Movie. This CD features studio recording some of which were performed live in On Tour.

How do you follow up an album like

From Elvis In Memphis and the singles and follow up album that flowed from the 1969 recording sessions at Chip's Moman's Memphis American Sound Studio's? In February 1970 RCA recorded Elvis live in Las Vegas and released the classic live album, On Stage, but it was not until June of that year that Elvis re-entered a studio to cut an album proper. Elvis Country was the result, it was Elvis' only real concept album and in my opinion does rate as Elvis best album.

This is a tremendous collection of stunning ballads and the rocking 'I slipped I stumbled I fell'. The outtakes are interesting and I haven't got tired of listening to 27 versions of 5 songs. Interestingly 'Husky Dusky Day' also appears and though very short (50 seconds) it is quite an amusing little ditty sung in duet with the lovely Hope Lang. One of the best FTD releases by far!

Namely You Don't Know Me the Ray Charles classic and The Girl I Never Loved would have worked on any early 60's Elvis Is Back type LP. But then alas there is the up tempo film songs and they really are quite terrible. 'Who needs money' well I DO, to keep buying these new re-issues, so please FTD make it a worthwhile re-issue. Dont worry I have 'Confidence' in your decisions, theres no job to emmense for these guys haha. Clambake move soundtrack was helped by its great and I do mean Great bonus tracks, Guitar Man, Big Boss Man to name but two.

'Never Say Yes' is a wonderful song and is even more enjoyable when heard on its out-take forms and alos do treat yourself to the out-take of the ballad 'Am I Ready', you will find it fuller and, even it is hard to admit, better than the original take on many levels. Plus don't forget the silly numbers (every Elvis movie has them!) 'Beach Shack' and 'Smorgasbord' and it still turns out to be an unexpected enjoyable mid-60's Elvis listening experience. But, the icing on the cake on this ablum are the brilliant bonus songs 'Tomorrow Is A Long Time', 'Down In The Alley' and the beautiful 'I'll Remember You'. I cannot find the words to describe my emotions for these three gems - you will just have to buy the album for the total experience!
