From Elvis In Memphis : 40th Anniversary Legacy Edition - 2 CD Set contains 36 tracks across 2 CDs, including 10 original mono single masters. (And after all these were the actually hit records most have not actually heard!) This release commemorates the 40th Anniversary of Elvis' historic American Studio sessions that resulted in 'Suspicious Minds', 'In the Ghetto' and 'Kentucky Rain' among many others. The recordings have been remastered from the original album masters for optimum sound quality. After a 14-year absence from Memphis, Elvis Presley returned to cut what was certainly his greatest album (or, at least, a tie effort with his RCA debut LP, Elvis Presley, from early 1956). The fact that From Elvis in Memphis came out as well as it did is something of a surprise, in retrospect -- Presley had a backlog of songs he genuinely liked that he wanted to record and had heard some newer soul material that also attracted him, and none of it resembled the material that he'd been cutting since his last non-soundtrack album, six years earlier. And he'd just come off of the NBC television special which, although a lot of work, had led him to the realization that he could be as exciting and vital a performer in 1969 as he'd been a dozen years before. And for what was practically the last time, the singer cut his manager, Tom Parker, out of the equation, turning himself over to producer Chips Moman. The result was one of the greatest white soul albums (and one of the greatest soul albums) ever cut, with brief but considerable forays into country, pop, and blues as well. Presley sounds rejuvenated artistically throughout the dozen cuts off the original album, and he's supported by the best playing and backup singing of his entire recording history. Spinout a great album, a wonderful listening experience. From the classic title track and the lovely ballads such as 'Am I Ready' and 'All That I Am' to the great rock numbers 'Never Say Yes' and 'I'll Be Back' there appears to be something for everybody in this package. 'Never Say Yes' is a wonderful song and is even more enjoyable when heard on its out-take forms and alos do treat yourself to the out-take of the ballad 'Am I Ready', you will find it fuller and, even it is hard to admit, better than the original take on many levels. Plus don't forget the silly numbers (every Elvis movie has them!) 'Beach Shack' and 'Smorgasbord' and it still turns out to be an unexpected enjoyable mid-60's Elvis listening experience. But, the icing on the cake on this ablum are the brilliant bonus songs 'Tomorrow Is A Long Time', 'Down In The Alley' and the beautiful 'I'll Remember You'. I cannot find the words to describe my emotions for these three gems - you will just have to buy the album for the total experience! |

This Clambake CD set gives you the original LP, then a batch of first takes and alternate takes. Beautiful packaging and detailed booklet help show the production process and how the songs came to be, and I have to say that 'Clambake' contains some of the most beautiful ballads of any Elvis film. Namely You Don't Know Me the Ray Charles classic and The Girl I Never Loved would have worked on any early 60's Elvis Is Back type LP. But then alas there is the up tempo film songs and they really are quite terrible. 'Who needs money' well I DO, to keep buying these new re-issues, so please FTD make it a worthwhile re-issue. Dont worry I have 'Confidence' in your decisions, theres no job to emmense for these guys haha. Clambake move soundtrack was helped by its great and I do mean Great bonus tracks, Guitar Man, Big Boss Man to name but two. |
